"Red Flag16-03" Nellis AFB 2016
"Red Flag" is an advanced aerial combat training exercise hosted several times a year at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. During my trip through the USA in Summer 2016 I had the opportunity to stay 2 days in Las Vegas. Unfortunately the media day took place at another date, but at least I could take some pictures of the participating aircrafts at the fence of the airbase. Nellis Air Force Base is one of the largest fighter bases in the world. I’ve already been there in 2011 and 1999 but 2016 was my first “Red Flag”. It was impressive to see the mass launch of aircrafts. To take photos inside the base would have been the best place, but at least I was able to take some shots of takeoffs and landings.
“Red Flag” ist eines der grössten Luftwaffenmanöver in der Welt. Seit 1975 findet das Manöver mehrmals jährlich in Nevada USA statt. Als Base dient die Nellis Air Force Base nord-östlich von Las Vegas und als Übungs-Range dient die "Nellis Range", ein 31‘000 km2 umfassendes Übungsgebiet. Nebst amerikanischen Luftstreitkräften nehmen an der Übung oft auch Luftwaffen aus dem NATO-Bündnis sowie befreundeter Staaten teil. Am "Red Flag" werden täglich zwei Missionen geflogen, die Zeitfenster dafür sind der frühe Nachmittag und Abend. Innerhalb von 90 Minuten starten zwischen 60 und 70 Jets welche für 2-3 Stunden ihre Missionen durchführen.
