Royal International Air Tattoo 2017

The Royal International Air Tattoo in Fairford claims to be the largest Airshow in the world and I guess it is: in the 2017 edition 246 military and civil aircrafts took part from 26 countries around the world. Together with 160’000 other visitors I attended the RIAT this year – it was my first visit since 2007. The main theme of the Show was the 70th anniversary of the US Air Force. Most of the active US Air Force Jets took part in the show including the “Thunderbirds” and the F-22 Raptor Display Team and as surprise a B-2 Spirit showed up on Sunday. Friday was the only show day with good weather conditions, but I arrived late evening so I hadn’t the chance to get sunny pictures because the other show days it was very cloudy. On Saturday, as a result of low clouds, some of the flying displays were cancelled including the F-22 display. Sunday's weather was mostly dry and the clouds were high enough for everything to display. On departure day Monday the sun showed up again.

My personal RIAT 2017 highlights were the F-22 display, the Ukrainian Suchoi Su-27 which flew directly after a rain shower, then of course the show of the “Thunderbirds” which I already have seen in the United States several times and the as well the fly-past of the B-2 Spirit.

Im Juli 2017 besuchte ich nach 10 Jahren wieder einmal das Royal International Air Tattoo in Fairford Grossbritannien. Diese Airshow gilt weltweit als die grösste Show. 246 Flugzeuge aus 26 Nationen nahmen am Tattoo teil, mehrheitlich militärische Maschinen aber auch einige zivile Flugzeuge. Die Besucherzahl lag bei rund 160'000 Personen – also ein Anlass der Superlative. 2017 wurde im Rahmen des RIAT das 70-jährige Bestehen der US Air Force gefeiert. Aus diesem Grund kamen auch die Thunderbird über den Atlantik – nach 10 Jahren der erste Europabesuch und auch das F-22 Raptor Display-Team schaffte es nach Fairford. Für mich Grund genug, wieder einmal an dieser Show teilzunehmen. Leider war das Wetter nicht optimal. Der Freitag war der einzige Showtag mit gutem Wetter - doch da ich erst Abends nach England flog nützte mit das wenig. Am Samstag war es zwar trocken, aber wegen der tiefen Wolken mussten etliche Jet-Displays gecancelt werden, unter anderem auch das F-22 Display. Sonntags waren die Wolken zum Glück ein bisschen höher und das ganze Programm konnte wie geplant durchgeführt werden. Als Überraschungsgast schaute sogar noch eine B-2 Spirit vorbei. Von der fotografischen Ausbeute habe ich mir noch ein bisschen mehr erhofft, aber ein paar gute Shots hat es dennoch gegeben. Meine Highlights waren das F-22 Display, die ukrainische Suchoi Su-27, welche nach einem Regenguss ihr Display flog, natürlich die Show der Thunderbirds, welche ich 2007 in Fairford und später einige Male in den USA schon fotografiert habe, aber auch der Überflug der B-2 Spirit. Am Montag habe ich dann noch die Abflüge fotografiert, bevor ich mich Richtung Wales begab, um dort noch 3 Tage im Mach Loop zu fotografieren. Dazu mehr im folgenden Bericht....
