Tactical Weapon Meet Florennes 2017

From June 5th to 16th the exercise Tactical Weapon Meet (TWM) was held at Florennes Air Base in Belgium. The exercise was organized by the 1st Squadron “Stingers” based at Florennes. Aircrafts where involved from Hellenic Air Force (F-4E Phantom), Polish Air Force (Mig 29 Fulcrum), Italian Air Force (Eurofighter), Spanish Air Force (Eurofighter), Royal Air Force (Bae Hawk) and Belgian Air Force (F-16 Fighting Falcon). The aim of the meeting was to train young pilots to qualify as 2-ship leaders. This excersise was the largest fast-jet exercise at Florennes since the days of the Tactical Leadership Programms which used the Belgian base until it was relocated to Albacete in Spain.

On June 15th the “Stingers” organized a spotter day. The stars of this event where old warriors of the cold war. The Polish Air Force sent three Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrums to Florennes and the Hellenic Air Force was there with two McDonnell Douglas F-4E (AUP) Phantom II fighter-bombers. Visitors from France showed up as well for that day: two Dassault Mirage 2000-5Fs from 1/2 “Storks” Cigognes of the French Air Force one of them with special markings commemorating the disappearance of French ace George Guynemer.

Vom 5. bis 16. Juni fand in Florennes Belgien die Übung "Tacical Weapon Meet" (TWM) statt, organisiert von den "Stingers" (1. Sqadron) welche in Florennes stationiert sind. An der Übung nahmen unter anderem die Luftstreitkräfte von Griechenland (F-4 Phantoms) Belgien (F-16 Fighting Falcon), Polen (Mig 29 Fulcrum), Großbritannien (BAe Hawk), Italien und Spanien (Eurofighter) teil. Ziel der Übung war primär die Ausbildung jüngerer Piloten, die sich während der Übung als Two-Ship-Leader qualifizieren konnten. Das TWM war die grösste Übung mit Jets in Florennes seit den legendären "Tacical Leadership Programms", welches 2009 von Florennes nach Albacete verlegt wurde.

Am 15. Juni organisierten die "Stingers" einen Spottertag. Die grossen Stars dieses Events waren zwei "Veteranen" aus der Zeit des Kalten Krieges. Die Griechische Luftwaffe entstandte zwei McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantoms nach Florennes und die Polnische Luftwaffe war mit drei MiG-29 Fulcrum vertreten. Die Phantom hatte ihren Erstflug 1958 und wurde zur Zeit des Vietnamkrieges eingesetzt, die MiG-29 wurde als russische Antwort auf die F-15 entwickelt und hatte ihren Erstflug 1977. Beide Muster sind bis heute im Einsatz, aber wohl nicht mehr so lange. Grund genug für mich, nach Florennes zu fahren und die Phantoms und Fulcrums einmal mehr abzulichten.
